Scientists discover a new ape in China
"Skywalker hoolock" is a new species of gibbon discovered by scientists in the forested area of southwestern China. Scientists have proven that this species is completely new to science.
The team found that this gibbon was a fan of the Star Wars movie and named the new species "Skywalker hoolock". The name also has the same meaning as the Chinese name "Hoolock tianxing" meaning "Movement of Heaven".

Dr Sam Turvey from the London Zoological Society said: "In the area where this species was discovered, many animals have declined or gone extinct due to habitat loss. Shoot and increase population The discovery of a special and rare gibbons living in a tropical jungle is a privilege for us. Science never knew ".
The research team, led by Pan Peng (Sun Yat-sen University, China), initially suspected that the gibbon they were studying at Gaoliongshan Nature Reserve (Yunnan) New species due to some minor differences in face recognition features such as white eyebrows and antennae. In addition, gibbons are well known for their use of landmarking, which is also a noticeable difference. A comprehensive comparison of the genes and the condition of this species with other species has confirmed that the Skywalker is a completely new species.
Dr Turvey said his team had climbed 2,500 meters to find the habitat of the species in Gaoligongshan Nature Reserve, where trees were cut down.
Scientists estimate that about 200 Skywalker apes live in China and are likely to be found in some neighboring Myanmar. However, due to habitat loss and population fragmentation, scientists believe that the gibbon should be classified as endangered.
